Is In Vitro Fertilization compatible with breastfeeding? Do we have alternatives for In Vitro Fertilization?

In Vitro Fertilization

April 1, 2006 (Low Risk)

In vitro fertilization with donated ovules does not contraindicate breastfeeding.

The hormonal over stimulation of the ovarium to obtain own ovules may poses a handicap to frequent on demand breastfeeding due to its known inhibitory effect.

Among the medication commonly used (e.g. Leuprorelin, Clomiphene, hMG, hCG, Progesterone, Estrogens and FSH) only the last two substances are known to inhibit milk production.
