Is Levocetirizine compatible with breastfeeding? Do we have alternatives for Levocetirizine?

March 23, 2018 (Low Risk)

Second generation antihistamine, derived from piperazine, with minimal sedative effects and very low toxicity even at high doses.

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breast milk, but it is an enantiomer and active metabolite of cetirizine.

No problems were detected in the short or long term in an infant whose mother took cetirizine during the first month after delivery as part of the treatment for pemphigus (Westermann 2012). Its high binding to plasma proteins makes its transfer to milk unlikely.

The British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology considers cetirizine safe during breastfeeding (Powell 2007).
